"Aiyaa! ______, did you hear about the immunizations we have to have before the fall, aru?" your best friend Yao whined into the phone.
"I know!" you replied, your voice choked with tears. "I hate shots! It's not fair! My mom's dragging me to get them done tomorrow!"
"No way, mine too! It's a conspiracy, aru!"
. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
And so the next day, the two of you found yourselves standing in front of the looming building of your local doctor's office.
"I don't wanna, aru," Yao whimpered, clutching your arm. "Mama made me leave Shinatty-chan at home, aru!"
You had to smile, despite your matching anxiety, at the thought of of your friend's fluffy cat plushie (complete with a shiny red bow). At least he had worn his snuggly Pikachu sweatshirt instead, so he could burrow deep into the hood and not lose an ounce of comfort. You had followed his example, and worn your own plushy Hamtaro sweater.
"Come on, Yao," you said, gently tugging on his hand. "We have to go in sometime..."
But as the two of you took a step forward, you imagined the glinting of foot-long syringes and found yourselves rooted to the spot.
Your knees shook uncontrollably. "On second thought..."
"I'd gladly skip school next year if I didn't have to get this shot, aru!" Yao wailed, his face a mask of horror underneath the adorable red cheeks and pointy ears of his Pokemon hood.
You clung to each other- in a completely non-romantic way, of course- as the dreaded building loomed terrifyingly above you. You were thinking it couldn't get any worse, when...
...The equally terrifying face of your mother peeked out of the door.
"Get the heck in here, you two!" she growled, flames burning in her eyes. "You're going to miss your appointment!"
"...Coming," you whimpered, silent tears streaming down your face.
You were sure Yao was going to have a panic attack while sitting in the waiting room, but luckily, they had Wi-Fi and you were able to access Crunchyroll on your e-reader. The two of you spent the time watching the adventures of Poyopoyo, the adorably spherical kitty; the giggles you shared successfully keeping your minds off of the imminent pain that was soon to come.
When they finally called Yao back, you still expected him to be a whimpering mess. Your fears were indeed justified.
"_____, I don't wanna go, aru!" he sniffles dramatically. "Don't let them take me and torture me, aru! School isn't important aru! Shots are so sharp and pointy and shiny aru, and it makes your arm hurt practically forever aru!"
"Yao, calm down!" you cried, sweatdropping slightly at his unconscious (but adorable) overuse of his verbal tic. "If you take this like the brave manly guy that you are, I'll give you a cute surprise~!"
There was a pause.
"...Cute?" Yao's ears perked up. "How cute, aru?"
You whispered confidentially into his ear, and his golden-brown eyes immediately brightened with gleeful sparkles.
"You've got a deal, aru!"
The two of you followed the nurse back into a tiny room, where Yao took a seat on the examination bench.
"Cute sweatshirt," the nurse commented in disinterested monotone, as she rolled up the sleeve on his left arm in order to disinfect the injection area.
"Thank you, aru," he replied pridefully, his manly dignity clearly showing through his voice. You bit back a snicker at how simply adorable your best friend was.
"Now, just relax your arm and hold still, okay?" As the nurse unwrapped the sterilized syringe, Yao began to panic again.
"I'm scared, aru," he whimpered, his breath quickening and tears forming in his eyes. You reached out and held his hand tightly.
"Ready?" the nurse asked, holding the needle at the ready. Yao screwed his eyes shut and cowered away, his unoccupied arm wrapped around yours.
"AIYAA!" he yelped as the needle pierced his skin. His grip on you tightened, but he refused to let any tears escape.
"All done," the nurse said robotically. She reached for a box of plain band-aids for one to place over the injection site, as a bead of dark red blood began to form. You and Yao shivered in unison. But as the nurse started to apply the plain, beige bandage, Yao stopped her.
"Wait! May I have... that one please, aru?" he asked sweetly, pointing to a different box on a shelf across the cubicle. The nurse obligingly took the box and applied a Hello Kitty band-aid.
"How cute! That's much better, aru," he said with a happy sigh. Then he held his arm out to you. "Kiss it better, aru~?"
You fought to control a blush from spreading across your face (and failed), but did as he said, gently pressing your lips to the pink bandage.
The nurse raised an eyebrow as she disposed of the trash and prepared the next syringe. "Are you two dating or something? Seriously..."
Your blush grew even darker, but Yao just laughed it off, squeezing your hand. "Not yet, aru~!" he replied cheerily.
Before you could react to that in any way, the nurse held up the shot threateningly. The light glinted menacingly off the pointy needle.
You whimpered softly. Yao patted your back soothingly.
"Okay, we're finally done! Time for my reward, aru!"
Sighing and shaking your head, you pulled out your phone while ignoring the throbbing in your own arm. "Just a minute, Yao. Geez," you replied.
After a moment or two, Yao's own phone buzzed. He pounced on it immediately, reading the recieved message gleefully.
-You were very brave! Here is your reward~ \(^w^)/ <3
He held his hand up to his face to stifle an oncoming nosebleed upon seeing the attachments.
"______ wearing a Hello Kitty nightgown?! Jackpot, aru~!!" he squealed, glomping you. (It was a very manly squeal, of course.)
You patted his head. "And you are very kawaii aru too.~"
