"AAARGH! I can't do it!" you wailed, closing your binder with a forceful slam. The grinning taco you had doodled on the front leered at you from the desk.

"Eh~? What's the problem, chica?" your friend Antonio asked, slinking over to your desk with a wide, silly smile spread over his own face.

You scowled, sticking out your lower lip and letting your breath escape in a frustrated huff. "I'm so failing this exam," you grumbled. You shoved your binder towards him, causing it to fall off the desk and land on the floor.

"What're you having trouble with? I can help~" he said with a wink. You rolled your eyes, but blushed a little despite yourself. It was no secret that your best friend's flirtatious ways left you flustered, no matter how platonic you insisted your relationship was. It was simply his personality, and it certainly wasn't a habit of his to curtail his dominant traits in order to prevent awkwardness. In some ways, he could be the very definition of awkward- at least for you.

"It's the stupid ser and estar," you complained, folding your arms obstinately. Your voice rose as your tirade progressed. "They're so confusing! How in the world can you keep all the ways that they're used straight? I just don't get it! Every situation is different! WHY?!"

[A/N: Ser and estar are two forms of the verb "to be". Depending on the subject/situation, a different form is used. You also have to conjugate the verb endings depending on the subject of the sentence. It's extremely annoying, in my opinion. -_-]

You slammed your head down on the desk with a groan. Toni stood beside you and patted your shoulder soothingly.

"It's okay, _____. I can help you with that~"

He pulled up a chair beside you and retrieved your Spanish binder, flipping through your notes. You glanced up warily, watching the brunette out of the corner of your eye.

"Here we go!" he said gleefully, finally having located the corresponding notes. His smile seemed to be the materialization of sunshine- perpetually warm and bright. "Not that I need these, or course. Fusosososo~"

Your eye twitched slightly. The one thing that really annoyed you about the Spaniard: his seriously weird laugh.

"Okay~! So, to start with, estar is usually used for temporary locations and conditions, like sickness or emotions. Ser is for permanent physical characteristics or personality traits, or things that don't change! Like your name, origin of birth, and your gender! Unless, of course, you get a sex chan-"

Before he could finish, you punched him in the head. "Toni? Shut up, please."

This was going to be a long lesson.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was nearly two hours later, and you hadn't made any significant headway whatsoever. You were honestly about to scream, you were so frustrated. Antonio took advantage of this.
"Repeat after me," he declared. "¡_____ está muy frustrada! Fusosososo!" (1)
"SHUT UP!" you shouted, slamming your head onto the desk again and clamping your hands over your ears. "Just shut up! You're not being any help at all!"
He fell silent. After a moment or two had passed without a witty comeback of some sort, you lifted your head up off the desk- just enough to see two brilliant emerald eyes gazing at you from about an inch away. You jumped, and would have fallen off the chair if Toni hadn't caught you.
"D-d-don't do th-" you started to protest, but his arms merely wound tighter around your waist. He pouted adorably, and you hated yourself when his expression made your stomach flip.
"Look," he said gently. "Let's forget about the charts and tables and flashcards. Let's try something else." He set you upright on your chair and, ignoring his own, perched on the edge of the desk in front of you.
"I'm going to say something en Español. Try and translate, and figure out which form I used and why." He smiled. "Ready?"
"I guess," you muttered.
"Okay~! Tu eres muy, muy bonita!" (2)
You knew enough Spanish at this point not to even have to manually translate the statement, and your cheeks flushed. "Shut up, Toni."
He laughed loudly. "You know, when you keep saying 'shut up' so often, it kinda loses any effect it might have had~ Anyway, what was the form of the verb that I used?"
You sighed. "Eres, the tu form of ser... right?"
"¡Muy bien, chica!" Antonio said with a huge grin. You found yourself reluctantly smiling a little back. "Why did I use ser?"
"Because... bonita is a... permanent characteristic..." you mumbled. "Geez Toni, you're making me sound like a complete narcissist!"
"But it's true~!" he chirped. "Moving on~ Estoy contento con usted." (3)
Your eyes widened as the meaning of his statement sunk in. "Oh, screw you!" you snapped.
Toni wiggled his eyebrows suggestively. "Is that a promise?"
OH. MY...
You blushed furiously and started to stutter as you tried to think of a suitable comeback. You ended up settling with "You're an idiot!"
Antonio's green eyes glinted, and he smirked, leaning a bit closer to you and licking his lips. "¡Ese nene es un tesorito, me lo comería!" (4)
That was one you couldn't figure out right away. Your nose wrinkled and you frowned in concentration. "Hold on, I don't quite get-"
"Me estoy enamorando de ti," (5) he purred. His voice was no longer a goofy, happy one; it had lowered to become almost...
Seductive?
He grabbed your arm and pulled you out of your chair, standing up himself as well. Leaning forward, he gave your ear a little nip, making you yelp.
"Que harias si te besara ahora mismo?" (6) he whispered huskily. Just the sound of his voice caused a colossal blush to cross your face.
"W-wait," you laughed nervously. "I don't think 'to be' was even in that one at a-"
And then his mouth was on yours.
You stood perfectly rigid, far too shocked to react in any way. His hands were swimming through your [h/c] hair as he kissed you sweetly.
After a few moments had passed with no response from you, he pulled back to an almost imperceptible degree.
"No seas timida~" (7) he murmured against your lips. You shook your head and pulled back, giving him a smack on the head and detaching yourself completely.
"Stop this cheesy act, will you?" you demanded. "I asked you to teach me Spanish, not take my virginity."
Toni rubbed his head sheepishly and sighed. "Ahh, don't I wish~" He smirked, and his teeth glinted. "Even though you were the one talking about screwing. Anyway," he continued off-handedly as you simmered with indignation, "you don't seem to be very responsive to traditional methods of teaching, so I figured it would be best to give you a little... motivator."
"What the heck is that supposed to mean? Do you think I want you like that?"
He winked. "Oh chica, you know you do~"
You scowled darkly and blushed. "Okay, ignoring that obvious misconception, you say that that whole thing was only a 'motivator' for me, meaning that it was in fact only an act, as I said before," you snapped, feeling strangely hurt. "...Wasn't it?"
He grinned widely. "Nope~!"
Before you had time to react, he was kissing you again- and this time he wouldn't take no for an answer, taking your face in his hands and moving his mouth in ways that made you light-headed and dizzy. Slowly and carefully, you began to kiss him back, gripping the collar of his shirt in your hands.
He smiled at that and upped the intensity a little bit more. He was about to slip his tongue in your mouth when you pulled away for air.
"Cool it, Casanova," you told him, fighting the smile that threatened to spread across your own face. Ignoring your words, he leaned close again.
"Estoy enmorado de tu," (8) he breathed, peppering your mouth with gentle kisses. "¿Quieres ser mi novia?" (9)
"...Si," you whispered.
Toni's face suddenly lit up like someone had given him a lifetime's supply of churros. "YAY~!" he shouted, glomping you in a tight hug and losing his romantic demeanor completely. He laughed, his green eyes sparkling ridiculously. "_____'s gonna be my girlfriend~! ______'s gonna be my girlfriend~! I'M SO HAPPY~!!" he cried, skipping gleefully around the desk like a little kid.
After quite a while of that, you finally lost your patience. "Antonio!" you snapped, grabbing his arm as he pranced past you again.
He looked at you adoringly. "¿Si, mi amor~?" he asked sweetly.
Putting both hands on his arm, you yanked him closer to you.
"¡Cállate y besame, idiota!" (10) you replied.
And he did. <3
I learned the difference between estar and ser as this....
"Be estar in the CFL" ... Condition, Feeling, Location
(It might be a bit Canadian because it sounds like 'be a star in the Canadian Football League' 😂)
