Ring ring...

Ring ring...

You gripped your cell phone in your sweaty palms, anxiously waiting for the person on the other end to pick up. After several more agonizing moments, he finally did.

"What?" he muttered, his voice even more emotionless and monotone than usual.

"Leon, look, I know you don't really want to talk to anyone right now, but I need you to be brave and come out of your room. It's really important."

"No."

You stuck your tongue out, imagining the Chinese city's grouchy face. "Come on, you know that I wouldn't want to mess with you when you're in one of these moods unless it actually was really important," you argued. "You have to come. I don't care about Canada, but you can't just stay in this stupid slump all day!"

He paused; probably offended by the reference to the country who shared his same birthday, and had been for once enjoying the attention of all the other countries all day. Unfortunately, it was his own turn to be overlooked. Naturally, he was in a foul mood.

Worried that he would hang up on you, you blurted, "I'll totally spam you with text messages if you don't show up."

He sighed, and you could hear the exasperation in his voice. He really hated it when you spammed him. "Whatever," he replied grouchily. "Where?"

You bit back a relieved sigh of your own. "Just step outside... I'm right in the back."

Grumbling quietly, Hong Kong hung up the phone. Stepping into his silk slippers and tying the sash on his burgundy robe, he reluctantly left the confinement of his room.

You were waiting for him outside. The last golden streaks of twilight were just beginning to seep out of the sky and disappear beyond the huge, grassy hill in the back beyond China's house. Perfect. Before Hong Kong could say anything, you grabbed his hand and dragged him up to the top of that same hill without a word.

"______, what..." he mumbled. You ignored him until the two of you reached the top. Releasing his hand and plopping down on the cool grass, you smiled sweetly and patted a spot next to you.

"Just trust me, okay? I wouldn't drag you out here for nothing," you said.

Slowly, he lowered himself to the ground next to you, bringing his knees up to his chest and wrapping his arms around them tightly. He was still frowning.

After a minute or two, you nervously noted the deepening scowl on his face and checked the time on your phone. You sighed in relief.

"And... now," you whispered.

"Huh?" he asked, but his head snapped around as a loud crack was heard.

His golden eyes instantly lit up, the glowing sparks drifting through the sky reflected brightly in them. The corners of his mouth began to form a tiny smile.

"Fireworks," he breathed.

You giggled softly. "Of course~"

The two of you sat contentedly side by side as the firecrackers burst in the sky above you. Red and gold and orange, and green and blue, pink and purple and white... lots of different colors and shapes. Both of your favorite kinds made multiple appearances- you liked the ones that trailed down softly like weeping willows after exploding, and Leon liked the big ones that fizzed and cracked loudly.

Colorful sparks shot across the sky as firecracker after firecracker exploded with fizzes, shrieks and pops. If you knew Leon at all, the glint in his eyes showed that he was absolutely loving it.

After five or so more minutes, they all slowly died down, leaving trails of smoke criss-crossing across the darkened sky. You turned to Hong Kong with a smile.

"Happy birthday, Leon," you said.

His grin matched your own as he reached out, gently fondling the strands of [h/c] hair that framed your face.

"Thank you," he whispered.

"Don't thank me yet," you replied. "Here comes the best part!"

Three final, huge fireworks exploded right above you, in the shape of three Cantonese characters.

我爱你... ngo ai ne.

I love you.

Hong Kong's eyes widened, and his smile faded. He watched silently as the characters drifted and faded away into wisps of gray smoke.

Your heart sank. Great, you had totally just screwed everything up... Tears began to well up in your eyes, and you opened your mouth to apologize when you were crushed into a tight hug.

"______... ngo ai ne, ngo ai ne, ngo ai ne..." he repeated over and over again, burying his face into your shoulder. He held you close to his chest and nuzzled you gently. "Thank you..."

You sighed happily and wrapped your arms around his neck. He smirked.

That Canada dude's gonna be so jealous... I got the best birthday present ever.~

(Omake~)

"SURPRISE!!!"

The two of you yelped in shock as rainbow sparks fizzed all around you. The beaming faces of China, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea soon popped up, all of them holding lit sparklers.

"Thanks for helping, you guys~!" you chirped.

"No problem aru! You two make the most KAWAII COUPLE EVER ARU!" China cried, glomping the two of you. The other three soon followed (Japan settling for merely placing a hand on Hong Kong's shoulder, instead of full-on tackling him).

"You guys are so embarrassing," Hong Kong muttered. But there was a smile on his face.~
